Since 1935, a trip to the beach has meant a stay at Myrtle Beach State Park each year for hundreds of thousands of families from across the United States and Canada.

Located in the heart of the bustling Grand Strand, one of America’s most popular and diverse vacation destinations, Myrtle Beach State Park also is a natural retreat, home to one of South Carolina’s last stands of easily accessible, oceanfront maritime forest.

Programming and a nature center offer visitors the chance to learn more about dolphins, sea turtles and the abundant bird and plant life that grace the leafy park.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
The nature center offers saltwater aquariums, live reptiles and interactive natural history displays to help visitors understand the significance of the park.  An outdoor wildlife habitat complete with bird feeder, bird houses, butterfly garden, bird baths and nature sculpture is available for viewing even when the nature center is not open.

TRAILS
The “Sculptured Oak Nature Trail” provides a rare opportunity to see one of the last stands of maritime forest on the northern coast of South Carolina.  From the parking area for the Nature/Activity Centers, cross the road and begin an easy walk on the Sculptured Oak Trail to experience what the woodlands of the Grand Strand used to look like. You will pass through a forest of oaks, wax myrtles, hollies, poplars, and magnolias, which is the home of a diversity of birds, reptiles and amphibians.

You can go straight and visit an overlook at a pond (which is rain dependent), or turn left toward the beach. After a short walk you will come to a branch and the Yaupon Trail is on the right. Both the Sculptured Oak and Yaupon trails lead to the beach, which is accessible by boardwalks. If you are looking for a longer walk you go out on one, cross a parking area, and return on the other.

Restrooms and water are available at the office, and at facilities throughout the park. Insect repellent is recommended in warm weather.  Sculptured Oak Trail 0.5 mile and the Yaupon Trail 0.4 mile.
