Myrtle Beach is famous for its fun in the sun. Whether it's splashing in the surf, sliding down the water slides or taking a refreshing dip in the Paradise Resort's pools, Myrtle Beach offers lots of ways to stay cool on sunny days and have a good time in the great outdoors.
But what about those not-so sunny days when rainy and cloudy weather has other plans? Or even those dog days of summer when the humidity is so high that no amount of cold water will do the trick? While many vacationers see it as a wasted vacation days, other see it as an opportunity to for the kids to do something new and different indoors.
That’s where the Children’s Museum of South Carolina comes in handy. Not only does the air-conditioned building contain more than 7,500 square feet of space for kids to explore, the Children's Museum of SC also offers a hands-on educational experience that is so fun your kids won't realize they are learning. Let's just keep that part our little secret.
Located across Oak Street from the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, the Children's Museum of SC offers wall-to-wall activities for kids of all ages. Guests can play with more than 100 interactive exhibits, displays and play stations designed to pique a child's imagination and make learning fun. Parents can participate in the fun and take opportunities to discuss some of the scientific principles at play in the exhibits.
Both children young and old, including parents who still feel like kids at heart, will find plenty to see and do at the recently renovated attraction. Several new attractions include interactive displays that focus on nature and environmental issues, including Turtle Time, an exhibit featuring a collection of various species of reptiles that are native to the state.
The Discover SC display covers the natural history of the Palmetto State, including geology and geography. From the sandy shores and muddy swamps of the SC Lowcountry to the rocky foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, SC has a diverse array of land and water features that are covered by the exhibit.
Other displays include a recycling center, a miniature city that uses pedal-power for energy, a Puppet Playhouse where kids can stage their own shows, a mock school bus complete with educational cartoons on the TV screens, and a gem-mining game where kids can find real artifacts and take them home as souvenirs.
Children can also role play in professional work environments such as a bank, doctor's office and pizza delivery business. Kids can get hands-on experience and learn important lessons about the business world by pretending to be an employee or a customer. A mock teller machine allows kids to make fake deposits and withdrawals.
Let your kids explore their artistic sides in the Children Museum of SC's art studio that allows children to play artist for a day. Large canvases let kids paint pictures they can take home as a souvenir for their visit. There are various activities scheduled throughout the week, including the Tales for Tots story time sessions on Tuesdays and a full slate of games and fun activities on Fun Fridays.
The Children’s Museum of SC is available for birthday parties and other group functions upon request. Admission is $8 for children 5 and over and adults are also required to purchase tickets to join their little ones on the visit.
