Perhaps a famous old ad slogan said it best: “Soup is Good Food.” And that point has been served up in heaping helpings to Grand Strand residents and visitors for the past 18 years at the annual Souper Supper event.

Scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Market Common's Valor Park, the Souper Supper event features more than 50 chefs, restaurants and culinary arts students preparing and sharing their best soup recipes for hungry patrons on a cool autumn day in Myrtle Beach.

Souper Supper allows patrons to sample a wide selection of soups, broths, bisques and chowders, ranging from traditional favorites like chicken noodle and Italian wedding to more creative concoctions, such as Smoked Grouper Chowder and Pumpkin Bisque.

Guests also get the opportunity to vote for their favorite flavors for the awards judging and presentations, just try not to dribble soup on your ballot. Past winners include Granny Apple Crisp Bisque, Shrimp, Corn and Crab Chowder, Chicken and Chorizo Soup, Apple and Butternut Squash Bisque and a liquefied spin on a Thanksgiving classic, Tur Duc Hen Soup.

Some of the entries are popular versions from some of the Grand Strand's best restaurants, including the Sea Captain House's famous She Crab Soup and Waterscapes at the Marina Inn at Grande Dunes' Chilled Mango and Watermelon Soup. But some surprisingly savory soups hail from the kitchen of the local Horry Georgetown Technical College culinary arts students, who have fielded some past winners.

Soups are served with crackers and other baked goods, and water and other beverages are available for cleansing the pallet between flavors. A number of desserts are also on display for finishing your all you can eat soup buffet with something sweet. Live music and vendors are also featured so visitors can dance or relax on a park bench while your soup settles. Or walk off your liquid feast with a stroll through the park and shopping district. Awards will be announced and presented on the main stage at the end of the event.

The Souper Supper is held from noon to 3 p.m., but growing crowds to this social and culinary event makes it smart to arrive early. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the gate. Proceeds from the event go toward providing scholarships for HGTC culinary arts students. For more information or to purchase advance tickets, click here.
