North Myrtle Beach is a popular place for a couples retreat, in part because of the wide selection of activities available for parties of two. While there's plenty of things to see and do for families, golfers and large groups, North Myrtle Beach is especially suited for couples looking to spend some quality time together, no matter how you define “quality time.”

From romantic dancing and dining hot spots to outdoor activities designed for making memories, you'll find it all in North Myrtle Beach. Here's a list of suggestions for couples looking to have a special getaway you will remember for years to come:

Dancing: North Myrtle Beach is the home of the shag, perhaps the most fun dance for couples to cut a rug to the sounds of classic beach music. Founded in the dance clubs along Ocean Drive in the 1950s and 60s, the shag is the state dance of South Carolina and still alive and kicking in the same bars today. Don't know how to shag? Many clubs like Fat Harold's hold free dance lessons, and there are always shag fanatics willing to teach total strangers the steps. You and your loved one will be scooting across the sawdust-strewn dance floor for hours, and perhaps even forever.

Dining: Regardless of your tastes and taste buds, North Myrtle Beach has the ideal setting for a romantic dinner. North Beach Plantation guests don't even have to leave the property to find the ultimate in fine dining at 21 Main, an upscale steak and seafood eatery with an elegant atmosphere. Other popular fine dining establishments include the Brentwood House, Chestnut Hill, Joe's Bar & Grill, Greg Norman's Australian Grill and SeaBlue. For a more casual experience, check out Capt. Poo's, Duffy's, Flying Fish, House of Blues and Rockefeller's Raw Bar. Of course, anywhere with an ocean view or a vista of sunset over the Intracoastal Waterway is a real mood-setter.

Entertainment: Catch a concert at one of the many music venues in North Myrtle Beach, such as the Alabama Theatre and House of Blues at Barefoot Landing. National and regional touring acts play the main concert hall of the HOB on a regular basis, and on the patio deck on a nightly basis. Off-Broadway plays are featured at the Alabama Theatre, including the long-running hit show “One.” Live beach music can be found at the clubs along Ocean Drive.

Outdoors activities: A romantic date doesn't have to involve a stuffy restaurant and overpriced movie at night. Modern couples are finding fun in the daylight hours in the great outdoors, and North Myrtle Beach can accommodate an adventurous daytime date. Go parasailing, jet skiing, kayaking or deep-sea fishing at one of the many outfitters along the Intracoastal Waterway, or rent a boat and take a private cruise for two. If you prefer dry land, the Go Ape Adventure Park features rope-climbing and ziplines. For those looking for a less extreme experience, La Belle Amie Vineyard in nearby Little River offers daily tours and wine tastings.

Weddings: One key reason that North Myrtle Beach is for lovers is directly attributed to the town's more relaxed restrictions on beach weddings. Over the years, more and more couples have chosen North Myrtle Beach as the special place to exchange their vows, and many married couples return each year to celebrate the anniversaries of the occasion. North Beach Plantation is the perfect place to hold a wedding ceremony, big or small, and the exclusive penthouse known as “The Bridge” is the premiere place to celebrate.
