North Beach Provides Front-Row Seat to Fall Festivals

Some say Labor Day weekend marks the end of the summer tourism season. But on the Grand Strand and at North Beach Plantation, we say it signals the start of the fall festival season – a time of cooler temperatures, smaller crowds and lots of fun events to attend.

Located a short drive to the downtown districts of Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, the two hottest spots for fall festivals, North Beach Plantation is the perfect place for your autumn getaway. Relax at the Four Diamond resort or head out to events that celebrate local food, music, culture and arts, as well as international-themed festivals.

The highlight of the autumn festival lineup in North Myrtle Beach is the Sept. 18-27 SOS Fall Migration, a 10-day tribute to the South Carolina state dance, the Carolina shag. Started on the beaches of the Grand Strand back in the mid-1900s, the shag brings thousands of dancers to the Ocean Drive district to take a rhythmic stroll down memory lane. New generations of shaggers have made this a family friendly event as the weekend events feature live beach music on the main stage in the Horseshoe and people dancing in the streets (or sitting in their lawn chairs) to enjoy the festivities. Food and beverage booths, arts and crafts vendors and kids' activities are part of the festival lineup.

Just a little farther north in the tiny fishing village of Little River, the 11th Annual Little River Shrimp & Jazz Festival comes to the waterfront district on Oct. 10-11. Pay tribute to one of the town's chief exports with dishes like Shrimp & Grits, Calabash-style Fried Shrimp and the famous Shrimp Cocktails fresh from the sea. The two-day event has live music, and not just jazz. Rock, pop, country and funk are on the lineup before the jazz headliners. A Kids Zone has lots of activities to keep the little ones entertained, while the grownups can enjoy shopping at the vendor booths and sampling food and drinks from some of Little River's most popular waterfront restaurants and bars.
