Snowbirds flying south for the winter won't find a better place to land than the Grand Strand and North Beach Plantation. Located in the heart of the 60-mile stretch of Carolina coastline, this AAA Four-Diamond resort provides a luxurious nest for escaping colder climates and enjoying a relaxing vacation experience you can only get at North Beach Plantation.

Featuring elegantly decorated accommodations with private oceanfront balconies, a spacious indoor and outdoor pool deck, and first-class amenities like the on-site 21 Main restaurant and Cinzia Spa, North Beach Plantation offers an upscale oceanfront paradise for peace and tranquility in the offseason. But with lots of winter events going on around the Grand Strand, it's hard not to go exploring for fun. Here's our list of things to do while you are in the area this winter:

Dancing: North Myrtle Beach is the birthplace of the Carolina Shag, the state dance of South Carolina and still a popular pastime in the Ocean Drive section of town. Started in the mid-1900s at local beach clubs and dance halls, the shag is still beloved by thousands who return each year to slide across the sawdust and sand-covered dance floors. Special events include the SOS Mid-Winter Break and the National Shag Dance Championships, but you can go shagging at the local clubs any given night.

Holiday events: The Grand Strand is magically transformed into a winter wonderland during the holidays, making it a great place to experience the season in an awesome setting. Guests at North Beach can catch the Intracoastal Christmas Regatta (Dec. 5), a Christmas boat parade that attracts thousands to the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway. For an extra special occasion, check out the Nights of a Thousand Candles festival at Brookgreen Gardens (Dec. 6-19) in Murrells Inlet. There are also several parades, tree lighting ceremonies and more to get you and your crew in the holiday spirit.

Shopping: North Beach is the ideal location for shopaholics and bargain hunters. Located within walking distance of Barefoot Landing, guests can shop at a wide variety of local and national chain stores. Only a short drive away are the recently renovated Myrtle Beach Mall, one of two Tanger Outlet Stores, and several big-box chains for a winter shopping spree. If you are willing to drive a bit farther, be sure to hit Broadway at the Beach, Market Common, and Coastal Grand Mall for some serious retail therapy.

Theaters: The Grand Strand offers year-round live entertainment at several critically acclaimed venues, including the Alabama Theatre at nearby Barefoot Landing. Along with The Palace Theatre and The Carolina Opry, the popular holiday shows hold the stage November through December, followed by their award-winning productions in January and February. For dinner and a show, check out Pirates Voyage and Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament for action-packed performances during a nice meal, and the Legend In Concert show features tribute artists doing impersonations of some of the biggest names in music and show business.

Wine Tastings: Located at Barefoot Landing just across Highway 17 from North Beach is the new Duplin Winery facility that provides tours of every step in the process of making the award-winning wines of the South's largest winery. Daily tasting sessions and tours are available. Also, nearby La Belle Amie Vineyard in Little River also offers tours and tastings, as well as a series of biweekly bonfires in the wintertime. Beginning with the annual Christmas Caroling Bonfire (Dec. 26), La Belle Amie holds bonfire on Saturdays with music, food, tours and wine tastings.

Perhaps the best part of your busy, but fun winter escape to the Grand Strand is the end of the day, when you can return to North Beach Plantation for a little rest and relaxation. Make North Beach Plantation your winter retreat and home for the holidays.
