Myrtle Beach is a great place to spend Halloween. There’s trick-or-treating for kids—one favorite haunt is the shops at Broadway at the Beach—and of course there’s also a few options for adults. The winner, again, is Broadway, which hosts a huge Halloween party and costume contest every year. The winner of Broadway’s costume contest takes home BIG prizes!

If you’re looking for a costume idea that’s different from what everyone else is wearing, make it yourself instead of shopping at a Halloween warehouse. Here are a few of our favorite DIY Halloween costume ideas, great for kids or adults:

MOOSE

This is easy: Wear brown pants and mostly-matching brown hoodie. Find a pair of natural colored gloves, brown or ivory will do, stuff them and pin or sew your “antlers” to the sides of the hood. Done!

DEVILED EGG

This costume’s a good combination of store-bought and home-spun. Buy devil’s horns and a tail, then wear all white. Make a circle of yellow felt (or construction paper in a pinch) and pin it to your belly. Voila! Deviled egg!

BAG OF JELLYBEANS

Use a clear garbage bag as a “dress” with leg and arm holes cut out. Stuff with colored balloon “beans” and wrap loosely at the neck with ribbon.

PINATA

This one takes a little bit more effort, but we love the way it turns out! You’ll need a hot glue gun, scissors and some crepe paper to make it work, which means you’ll probably want to make it at home and transport with you for your Myrtle Beach fall getaway, but it’s worth the effort! Get the DIY instructions here, then make your own.

SUPER MARIO BROTHERS

This is a super cute costume for brothers: Overalls, long-sleeved sweatshirts or T-shirts in green and red, white gloves, conductors’ hats in green and red, and a little bit of strategic felt are all you need. Just don’t forget the mustache – you can either buy a mustache sticker or make a mustache on a stick.

BLACK EYED PEAS

Wear bright green and darken one eye. There you have it: You’re a black-eyed pea.

SUPERHERO

This is the simplest way to make a superhero costume. Dress up in a single color and use colored (or silver if it works with your color-scheme!) duct tape to put a letter on your chest. Then tape a towel or pillowcase to your collar for a cape.

So if you’re planning a Myrtle Beach fall getaway and will be here for Halloween, don’t think you need to buy a throwaway costume! With a little planning and creativity, you can make a fun and affordable costume everyone will love.
